From the program for the San Diego concert on April 23, 1996:
DAVID HURLEY, countertenor, was born in 1962 into a medical family, and he dismissed the medical life early on, opting for a musical career at the age of eight, as a chorister in Winchester Cathedral. After five years at nearby Winchester College, David won a choral scholarship at New College, Oxford, where he combined the daily duties of singing in the chapel with a degree course in geography. From 1984 to 1990, when he joined the King's Singers, he was a freelance singer, performing with a variety of different ensembles and choirs, and also as a soloist. These days, the ensemble takes up all of David's working time. As well as being the group's high voice, he's also in charge of the travel, at least making use of his degree! When the group's timetable allows, he enjoys returning to his small cottage in a pretty village near England's south coast. Other interests include horseback-riding and sailing, although these are often difficult because he owns neither a horse nor a boat! From the 25th Anniversary Souvenir Book:
David Hurley - AltoFrom the liner notes to "Annie Laurie":
Born in 1962, he began piano lessons at the age of 6. A year later, when faced with the option of chorister trials for Winchester Cathedral or a trip to watch Southampton Football Club, he opted for the former and, whilst piano lessons continued, it was the disciplines of his life as a chorister he found increasingly enjoyable and rewarding. Having reached the position of Head Chorister, he moved on to Winchester College and then New College, Oxford as a Choral Scholar and geography student. After a period freelancing in the field of early music he joined the King's Singers in 1990 and now puts his degree to good use as the member responsible for the travel arrangements. He is the owner of a 200-year old house in a small village near Winchester where he finds time, between concerts, to relax, ride, sail and (on the odd occasion) cook.
DAVID HURLEY, countertenor, began his musical training at the age of eight as a chorister in Winchester Cathedral. He started singing alto at Winchester College, after which he went to New College, Oxford as a Choral Scholar. With a degree in geography, he found his way back to Winchester, where he rejoined the Cathedral Choir, combining it with a career as a free-lance singer. When not singing, David enjoys riding other people's horses and saling other people's boats. The newest member of the group, he joined the King's Singers in February 1990.
